Why apply?
Being an early-stage investor is an incredible job:
It puts you at the center of tech.
You get paid to talk to super geniuses all day and work with some of the smartest people in the world.
Every day is new and exciting, and that’s so rare to find in a role.
Why Chapter One?
You’ll be joining a world-class team of operators turned investors, with experience at companies like Tinder, Twitter, Scale AI, and more.
But we're not just a world-class team - we're a winning team.
Every Chapter One fund has been in the top percentile of returns, and that’s incredibly hard to do.
I say this because I’ve been part of competitive teams most of my life, both in sports and in my career, and it matters: it’s simply more fun to be on a winning team. And I’m confident that we’ll continue doing the work to build on our success and keep that momentum going.
Why you?
I thought I’d share a personal story that I hope will convince you - or anyone else you might know - to apply.
In December 2021, I read a Tweet from Jeff Morris Jr. announcing Chapter One’s second fund. At the end of the thread were these two Tweets:
A vision of the future and a call to action for the team Jeff wanted to build.
At the time, I was job hunting, and in so many ways, this data science job was 100% in my strike zone.
I mean, I had been a data scientist for 10 years, I was - by all measures - extremely qualified.
But I talked myself out of applying.
If I’m honest about the reason: I had followed Jeff on Twitter since 2016. He was very tech-famous to me. His insights about product and startups were always on my timeline - and I really respected his voice and point of view. He was a “who’s who” of the tech world.
I’m not trying to be “woe is me” about it, but I felt like I was just a random.
Luckily, a few weeks later, Spencer Farrar (investment partner at Theory) introduced me to Jeff after a conversation about what kind of person he was looking for. That connection led to an interview, a project for the team, and eventually a role at Chapter One.
In many ways, I look back, and I was a bit random. Even though I had worked in tech and knew how to code, I had no previous ties to venture.
But Jeff took a chance on me, and I’ll be forever grateful for that.
The reason I’m saying this is that if you’re reading this and there’s even the smallest part of you thinks - this could be a great fit, I love technology and would be value add to the team - please apply.
Don’t overthink it. You may be the person we’re looking for.
I’m a General Partner at Chapter One, an early-stage venture fund that invests $500K - $2M checks into pre-seed and seed-stage startups.
